Blacksmithing 101 (Beginner), One-day workshop - Saturday, May 4, 9 am - 4 pm
Learn the basic skills of blacksmithing to create your own metal projects. You will learn tapering, tempering and hardening of mild steel and make a punch or chisel to use in another project you will complete. All supplies included in price of $120.00 per student. Classes are held in Dan's Forge, which is located behind the Tavern. Only 8 students can be registered per class session and all students must be 16 years old or older.

Coffeetime Sip and Paint: Birds, Butterflies and Blooms Thursday, May 9, 12:30 - 3 pm
Students will learn to draw and paint birds, blooms and butterflies using images which they have. The instructor will help participants transfer images to paper or canvas to paint. Students will have a choice of watercolor or acrylic paints. All supplies are included.

- Maximum of 10 students.

Sourdough for Beginners, May, 11, 10 am - 4 pm
Learn how to make a beautiful and delicious loaf of sourdough bread.Along with a foundational understanding of sourdough, you will go home with your own batch of sourdough starter to begin your sourdough journey.

- Maximum of 12 students.

Water Reflections, Friday, May 24, 9:30 am - 3 pm
Learn how to create and paint waves of different types with different techniques in this fun-filled educational workshop. This includes waves, ripples and reflections. Open of all skill levels.

Decorative Woodburning, Saturday, May 25, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Learn the decorative art of woodburning. During this class, you will spend the day learning tips and techniques, then experimenting so that you can complete two works of art, suitable for framing. Open to all levels of experience. Those who wish to can go to lunch at the Tavern Café!

Painting a Heron in Acrylic and Oils, Friday, June 7, 9:30 am - 3 pm
In this class, you will do a unique background with a palette knife technique in acrylics. Then we will paint a beautiful blue heron, and finish off the heron with oils. This will be a fun and easy class with great results! You will finish a 10x10 canvas ready to hang.

Coffeetime Sip and Paint: Compelling Composition Friday, June 14, 10 am - 12:30 pm
Participants will make several thumb nail sketches to learn how to manipulate focal points in their work, then enlarge their favorite, and draw and paint their selection. Students will have a choice of watercolor or acrylic paints. All supplies are included.

Beginning Coiled Pine Needle Baskets, Friday, July 19, 9 am - 12:30 pm
Learn the ancient craft of turning pine needles into beautiful and functional coiled baskets. You'll be taught how to gather, prepare and start a small basket or woven mat, using pine needles gathered locally on the Northern Neck. No experience is necessary.

Fiber Fun with Looping, Friday, July 26, 9 am - 3 pm
In this easy technique, related to macramé, you'll create a variety of pieces, from pouches to decoative vase sleeves and more. This relaxing fiber craft creates a delightful free-form appearance. No experience is necessary.

Beginning Weaving, Three-day workshop: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, August 9, 10 & 11, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
This three-day class is an introduction to the process of handweaving on a floor loom. All materials and equipment are provided, and no previous weaving experience is required. Students will be provided with ample support from two experienced instructors as well as current members of the Tavern Spinners & Weavers Guild.

Next Steps in Coiled Pine Needle Baskets, Friday, August 23, 9 am - 12:30 pm
For students who took Vicki Cornish's "Beginning Coiled Pine Needle Baskets" on July 19th, this class will take you through additional techniques, such as more advanced stitches, how to dye pine needles, incorporating beads and other materials.

Fun with Coiled Baskets, Friday, August 30, 9 am - 3 pm
Learn how to use braided sea grass and waxed cord to design and make beautiful coiled baskets. Then continue learning, now using foraged items such as dried lily leaves and other found objects to make a truly one-of-a-kind basket. No experience is necessary.

Beginning Woodturning, One-day workshop - Friday, October 4, 9 am - 4 pm
In this introductory class, students will gain an understanding of the skills necessary to safely use spindle gouges and embellishing tools while operating a woodturning lathe. Partipants will turn a handle for one of several kitchen tools, such as an antique pepper grinder, honey dipper, ice cream scoop, bottle opener or wine bottle stopper.
- Instructor: Tavern Woodworkers Guild; Classes will be held in the "Tavern Meeting Building."
- Maximum of 5 students.
- $80. An additional material fee ($5 to $25, depending on selected kitchen tool) is payable to the instructor at the class.
