You are invited to visit the last surviving 1700's structure of its kind in Virginia's Northern Neck!

The story of this tavern and its relationship to the development of Northumberland County and Virginia's Northern Neck reflects what happened in countless court house villages throughout Virginia and the nation.

The Tavern Foundation (RHHT) would like to welcome you to our website, a visit to part of the historic town square in Heathsville. We are extremely proud of our accomplishments over the years; restoration of a 1795 Court House Tavern, operating Blacksmith Shop, Carriage House, Community Building and Pavilion – all supporting our guilds, restaurant, gift shop and community events and fund raisers.

Our mission is to maintain and operate RHHT to research, interpret and teach its history; and to continue its heritage as a living part of the community.

Upcoming Events

Saturday, Sept. 21st -- "Living History Day" at the Heathsville Farmers Market

There are always a lot of reasons to visit Heathsville, but Saturday September 21st is one of the best days to “Make It a Heathsville Saturday.” The entire community is coming together to offer a variety of fun shopping and things to do in conjunction with the Heathsville Farmers Market.

Step back in time this month. Local Historical Enactment Groups will be setting up a "Living History" encampment. A display of HIstorical Flags will also be erected.

Shop all your favorite vendors, selling local produce, fancy peanuts & honey, flowers, baked goods, local meat, locally-made handcrafts and more. We'll also have many new vendors.

See a Colonial Cooking Demonstration outside over a fire. Meet the School Master, who will be teaching a short 18th Century Schoolhouse Lesson, followed by "recess" at 10 am, 11 am and 12 pm.

The Northumberland Library's "Mobile Library" wil lbe on site and open for tours. "Big Blue," as the vehicle is affectionately called, is both an internet "hot spot" with computeres, as well as a place to browse the latest books.

While you're here, you'll also want to visit the Tavern's Forge, where members of the Tavern Blacksmith Guild will be at work. The Tavern's Woodworking Guild can be found in its colonial era workshop, located inside the Carriage House. The Tavern's collection of antique carriages is also on view there. The Quilt Guild can be found in their Studio, located on the first floor of the Tavern. The Spinners & Weavers Guild has their Studio on the second floor of the Tavern.

Also inside the Tavern is our Tavern Cafe´ and "Heritage Arts Center" Gift Shoppe. The shop has a huge variety of locally-made artisan wares, plus a number of "artisans-in-residence", ready to chat and show you what they do. Our Tavern Café offers a relaxing sit-down lunch. Don't miss the café's warm breakfast treats on Market Day! Or you can grab a bite at our food concession stand, located outside the "Tavern Meeting Building"; breakfast sandwiches available, too.

But elsewhere in the Heathsville community there are other big doings. You'll find interesting shops, attractions, eats and historical sites. Visit Ye Olde Book Shoppe, a used book store run by volunteers of the Northumberland Public Library. Browse the classy church thrift shop run by St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Check out Kathy's Korner for unique treasures for the home.

Take a tour of the Old Northumberland Jail courtesy of the Northumberland County Historical Society. Pick up your Historic Heathsville Walking Map, and wander past homes and buildings from every century since the 1700's.

"Make It a Heathsville Saturday" will take place on the third Saturday of the month, April thru October. Each Farmers Market has a different theme. Primis Bank is a sponsor of this community initiative.

The Heathsville Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Tavern Cafe´ and "Heritage Arts Center" Gift Shoppe is open until 2 p.m.
